New rule change for Michigan MMA

(c) “Amateur martial arts sports or activities” mean exhibitions or contests in which martial arts skills are taught or demonstrated in a school or similar venue and for which there is no charge or fee for attendance by the public.

(d) “Amateur mixed martial arts event” means a mixed martial arts contest or show that is not promoted or intended to be a for-profit commercial enterprise.

The State of Michigan made a mistake and wrote Ultimate Fight Challenge instead Of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) . Below is a Pic with the Boxing Commissioner Al Low, Governor Granholm and State Rep. Barbara Farrah at the Signing of MMA Bill in 2008. ( thats a UFC Hat - Maybe its there by mistake- haha)

UPDATE 1-30-09

What Trainers and Officials did they talk to?

Email Sent Monday Jan 26- 2009

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your inquiry.

I took over the responsibility of assisting with the development of the rules in June 2008 after another employee went on to assume another position within State government. In response to your question with regard to a list of Michigan Trainers and Officials that helped with the development of the rules-there is none. However, there were discussions with regard to the rules with members of the MMA profession that the Department had consulted with, but not physically documented during the rule process, through either meetings or telephone conferencing. For example, Mike Hawks, Michael Mersch, Mark Ratner, Neil Laporte, Ron DeLeon, Marc Fennell, Dan Severn, Kirk Jenness, and Steven Baum are just a few that I am aware of. However, this list is not inclusive. I hope this provides you helpful information.

Thanks.

Dear Senator <Insert Name>:

Dear Representative <Insert Name>:

I am writing to ask that you vote against 2007 PA 196, the Unarmed Combat Regulatory Act. I believe that regulations are a necessary and crucial part of ensuring safety in boxing and the mixed martial arts (MMA), but the act prohibits amateur boxers and mixed martial artists from competing.

Both MMA and boxers come from a background that has a great deal of mutual respect for their opponents. Having the ability to compete against others who have different backgrounds allows the competitors to expand their knowledge and skills.

With the current increase in costs required to hold these events it will essentially stop the amateur events as well. Currently the promoters who are able to make the increase in costs to have these events are using known professional fighters which bring larger audiences and capital. The amateur fight promoters do not have such a luxury and have smaller audiences and lower revenue. The professional fight promoter will have a large profit where the amateur promoter will often make enough money to cover the expenses of the event and most often less than what it cost to have the event.

If the 2007 PA 196 is enacted this will put an end to many of the smaller schools and gyms who regularly schedule fights. This will also cause many fighters to move to underground fighting and thus endangering the very person the act is said to protect.

Underground fighting movements are not regulated and there are no trained referees or medical personnel attending these fights. Currently all licensed amateur MMA and boxing events require the various professionals be in attendance ensure a safe and regulated environment.

I ask again that you vote against 2007 PA 196 and allow the current regulation to remain in effect and allow us to continue our competitions in a safe regulated arena.

Sincerely
