How are we a unique gym?
I think the biggest difference is, we are a group of people who share a common interest, in this case recreational boxing and mma. We're not selling you heavy bags or a ring or treadmills - we're selling you an environment - one that will not only get you into the best physical shape of your life, but will have a dramatic effect on all areas of your life. Being motivated by the trainers and inspired by the members is something you can't get when you're walking on a treadmill watching CNN. There is no hierarchy, everyone comes to train.

I'm not very athletic. Will I be too intimidated to workout?
No, it's quite the opposite. Most our members have never boxed before, and whether or not you're athletic remains to be seen. Don't consider yourself unathletic because you were the last one chosen in gym class. Remember you came in here to learn how to box, not show us what an accomplished fighter you are. We are able to take anybody and teach them to box like a professional boxer.

My girlfriend wants to try a lesson with me. Is this a good idea?
Absolutely. We've worked diligently at creating a great atmosphere throughout the gym. From the trainers and staff to the members, we make sure everyone feels included. We introduce members to each other, and use a lot of teamwork drills as part of the conditioning. Our goal is to introduce boxing & mma to an audience that it previously neglected. In order to do that, we keep the workouts safe and enjoyable. You won't have to worry about your kids getting hit, or your girlfriend getting hit on.

Will I get hit when I workout?
Not if you duck. Or if you don't want to. Sparring is an option, not a requirement. We start everyone out working on their technique using the focus pads. The focus pads allow the trainer to simulate sparring without actual contact. Once the client reaches a certain level of proficiency, they may choose to participate in a sparring session, or continue to work with the trainer using the focus pads. For those who choose to spar, we make sure that all sparring is safe and supervised. You don't want to show up for work the next day looking like us.

Do I need to make an appointment to train?
Only if you're doing a Private, Semi- Private lesson. Call the gym at 517-272-9693.

How about Lessons?
For weekly lessons, no appointment is necessary. Just show up during our Training Hours and we'll get started. In order to keep our environment successful- we expect every member who shows up for training to be on time and to participate with the class. If you want to train alone use your basement!!!

What about Open Gym?    Use this time to practice/train on your own or with another members.

My boyfriend doesn't want me to train, he thinks it might make me too strong and independent. What do you think? He's right, it will. Dump him.

Do you have a lot of female members?
We are working on it... all of them are easier to train than guys - they're smarter and listen a lot better.

Do I need to buy my own equipment?
Everyone will need to buy their own handwraps, which we sell at the front desk. You'll need to buy your own gloves as well.

Do I have to spar?
No, you don't.  But, I bet it won't be long before you start asking, "Can I spar?"

Can I bring my own trainer?
Big House Boxing is not your typical gym. Unlike most boxing/mma gyms, we do not allow outside trainers to bring in their own clients. Part of the lure of the gym is the atmosphere we create and the quality of the training. I think this is made possible by hand picking our trainers and developing our own method of training and conditioning.

Are there age limitations?
The only age limitations are 1) old enough to walk; and 2)  too old too walk.

Our classes will push you to the limit- Please be careful and stop if you need to.
Make sure you eat right, rest normally, and drink lots of water.
Stretch.
Boxing requires coordination, stamina, flexibility, and willpower.
You can be a great boxer if you want to be.
Learn rhythm.
Be consistant -
Make sure you keep a consistant schedule...and stick to it.
Don't skip training days, unless you absolutely have to.
Drink more water.
Breathe.
Practice, practice, practice, PRACTICE.
DONT MAKE EXCUSES

MUAY THAI, JIU-JITSU, WRESTLING, BOXING & MMA TRAINING

We have Heavy Bags, Speed Bags, Double End Bags, and more.

We start with the BASICS, including mechanics: stance, footwork, leverage, balance, movement - including rhythm and momentum, coordination, powerful straight fast snapping punches: jab, right hand (or left, if you're a 'southpaw'), hooks, upper cuts, and combinations. Also positioning: hands up, chin down, elbows in. Then there's defensive movements and strategies: head, arm and body movements - parrying & cuffing, slipping & faking, bobbing & weaving, lateral movements, angles, distance, timing - and on down the line.

There's also conditioning: circuit and mirror training, shadow boxing, heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope, strength training, and stomach exercises, plus roadwork, diet, and when and how to train - including stretching at the beginning and end of every workout, so you don't feel 'knocked out' the next day!

All of these techniques can be applied to help you learn focus and apply strategy that can help you in the rest of your busy life and can help instill confidence while you're shaping up!
